Bespoke chart samples

The six-generation circular chart in the shop suits most families. Bespoke is everything beyond it: a layout that shows the generations after you as well as the ones before, a caption that tells the family's story in your own words, or a motif that is not among the six in the gallery. These are the three most asked for, with their prices. Anything else is quoted individually.

Layout one

Descendants with marriages chart

£99 framed, 16 x 20 inch

Six generations of ancestors around one person, and beneath the chart a trunk that forks into each marriage: the spouse, then the children of that marriage, then their children. It was designed for a client who wanted his parents' and grandparents' lines above him and his own family below, on one sheet. The taller 16 x 20 inch page gives the descendants the room they need without shrinking the ancestors.

  • Up to 62 ancestors in five rings, as on the shop chart
  • One, two or three marriages side by side, each with its children and grandchildren and their years
  • Any of the six gallery motifs, or any of the six new motifs shown below; the samples show the Scottish Thistle
  • Fine art giclée print, 16 x 20 inches, archival pigment inks: £99 framed, £75 print only, £55 digital file

The names, dates and places on both samples are invented.

The two-marriages sample chart in a matte black wooden frame, 16 x 20 inches, standing on a white cabinet with oak drawers between two potted plants
As supplied framed. Matte black wooden frame, 16 x 20 inches; matte white is the other choice.
Sample 16 x 20 inch circular family tree chart with a thistle motif: five rings of ancestors around Thomas Rennie, and beneath the chart a trunk to his wife Margaret Lockhart and their three children
One marriage, three children. The trunk drops to the spouse and the children sit in a row beneath.
Sample 16 x 20 inch circular family tree chart with a thistle motif: five rings of ancestors around Robert Nairn, and beneath the chart a trunk forking into his first and second marriages, each with two children and their grandchildren
Two marriages, four children, four grandchildren. Each marriage has its own branch, captioned first and second.

Layout two

Family circular chart with a caption

£99 framed, 16 x 20 inch
The captioned Douglas Family sample chart in a matte black wooden frame, 16 x 20 inches, standing on a white cabinet with oak drawers between two potted plants
As supplied framed. Matte black wooden frame, 16 x 20 inches; matte white is the other choice.
Sample 16 x 20 inch circular family tree chart with a thistle motif: six generations of a fictional Scottish Borders family around Mark Douglas, and beneath the chart the heading The Douglas Family above a paragraph about where the family came from
A sample family, headed The Douglas Family. The paragraph names the places the family came from and who the chart was made for. The names and places are fictional.

The six-generation chart from the shop on a taller sheet, with a heading and a paragraph beneath it in your own words: where the family came from, what the records showed, who the chart was made for. The text is set in the chart's own colour and type, so the sheet reads as one piece rather than a chart with a label.

  • Heading of your choice: the family name, a place, or a dedication
  • A paragraph of three to five sentences, supplied by you or drafted by me from your tree for your approval
  • Any of the six gallery motifs, or any of the six new motifs shown below; the sample shows the Scottish Thistle
  • Fine art giclée print, 16 x 20 inches, archival pigment inks: £99 framed, £75 print only, £55 digital file

The sample family is invented. Yours is set from your verified records in the same way.

New motifs · Available on request

Six new motifs on the framed 16 x 16 inch chart

£85 framed, 16 x 16 inch

Six new watercolour motifs join the six in the gallery, by request rather than through the builder: the Welsh Dragon, the Compass Rose, the English Oak, the Claddagh, the Maple Leaf and the Southern Cross. Each is set behind the standard six-generation circular chart in the same matte black or matte white wooden frame, at the same prices as the gallery designs, and any of them can sit behind the marriages chart or the captioned chart above at those layouts' prices. The names on the six samples are invented.

How a bespoke chart is made

  1. 1

    Enquiry

Tell me which layout you have in mind and roughly how many people are in your tree. I confirm the fixed price, or quote for anything outside these three.

  2. 2

    Verified records

Send a GEDCOM export or the studio spreadsheet. I check the names, dates and places before any design begins, and query anything that does not add up.

  3. 3

    Design

Approximately 5 working days after your verified records arrive. Every name is set by hand around the motif you chose.

  4. 4

    Proof rounds

You receive a digital proof. Corrections and changes of wording go round until you approve it; nothing is printed before then.

  5. 5

    Print and dispatch

Giclée printing on archival paper, framed where ordered, and dispatched with tracking 3 to 5 working days after proof approval.

Questions

What counts as a bespoke chart?
Anything beyond the six-generation circular chart in the shop: descendants drawn beneath the chart, a caption, a different sheet size, or a motif that is not one of the six in the gallery. The three layouts on this page have fixed prices. Anything else is quoted individually.
How long does a bespoke chart take?
Design takes approximately 5 working days after your verified family records arrive. You then receive a digital proof and we go round until it is right. Printing and dispatch take 3 to 5 working days after proof approval.
Do the samples show real families?
No. Every sample on this page, including the captioned Douglas family chart, uses invented names, dates and places. Your own chart is drawn from your verified records.
Who writes the paragraph under the captioned chart?
Either of us. Send your own paragraph of three to five sentences with your records, or ask me to draft it from your tree and send it with the proof for your approval. The heading is your choice too: the family name, a place or a dedication.
Which motifs can I choose?
Any of the six gallery motifs (Scottish Thistle, Irish Harp, Welsh Daffodil, English Rose, Irish Shamrock and Celtic Knot) on every layout. The six new motifs, Welsh Dragon, Compass Rose, English Oak, Claddagh, Maple Leaf and Southern Cross, are available on request: on the standard 16 x 16 inch chart at the shop prices (£85 framed, £65 print only, £45 digital file), or behind the marriages chart or the captioned chart at the same prices as those layouts.
Does the £99 price include a frame?
Yes. £99 is the marriages chart or the captioned chart framed, 16 x 20 inches, in the same matte black or matte white wooden frame as the shop. The print on its own is £75 and the digital file on its own is £55. The six new motifs on the 16 x 16 inch chart are the shop prices: £85 framed, £65 print only, £45 digital file.
How do I enquire?
Use the contact form with the subject Bespoke chart enquiry. Say which layout you have in mind, roughly how many people are in your tree, and attach a GEDCOM file if you have one. I reply with the fixed price or a quote, and nothing is charged until you confirm.

Returns & Refunds Policy

Returns Policy Overview

Every product (digital files, unframed prints, or framed prints) available on this site is custom-made to order. To ensure the highest quality and fastest delivery, physical orders are fulfilled by regional print partners (LUMAPRINTS in the US, Artovo in the UK/EU). Because each piece is produced specifically for you upon ordering and data submission, our returns policy is tailored to bespoke manufacturing.

1. Damaged or Defective Items

If your physical order is damaged in transit or contains a manufacturing defect (such as a misprint or structural issue), you are entitled to a free replacement or a full refund.

  • Reporting Timeframe: Please report within 30 days of receiving your item.
  • How to Report: Email contact@markdmillican.co.uk with your order number and photographs of the damaged product and packaging.
  • Resolution: Free replacement expedited at no cost or a full refund to your original payment method.

2. Change of Mind / Buyer's Remorse

Because each design is custom-manufactured exclusively using your unique family data, we do not hold inventory. Therefore, we cannot accept returns or offer refunds for "change of mind" once an order is finalised and approved.

3. Order Cancellations & The Proofing Process

  • Data Pending (Full Refund): Cancel before submitting your GEDCOM or CSV data for a 100% full refund.
  • Proofing Stage (Partial Refund): If you cancel during the proofing stage before final print approval, a £45 processing fee is retained to cover design work, and the rest is refunded.
  • Final Approval (No Refund): Once final proof approval is submitted, printing begins immediately and orders cannot be cancelled or refunded.

4. Lost or Missing Packages

If tracking shows no updates or indicates your package has been delivered but is missing, allow 48 hours and check with neighbours or your local delivery office before contacting us for a replacement claim.
