Three new circular family tree chart designs

The six-generation circular charts in the design gallery show who your ancestors were and where each was born. These three designs build on it: the origins of each line read at a glance from a coloured band, the generations after you as well as before, and the family's story in the corners of the frame. All three are 16 x 16 inches in the same frames as the gallery charts, and the samples below all show one fictional family so you can compare like with like.

Design one · Where your family came from

Origins Ring

Six-generation circular family tree chart with a county-coloured outer band

£99 framed, 16 x 16 inch

The circular chart you know, with a narrow outer band coloured by the historic county where each line begins, and a ship marker on the generation that crossed the sea.

Every outermost ancestor's segment takes the colour of the county of their earliest recorded birthplace, keyed to the motif's watercolour palette, so a glance at the rim answers the question families ask most: where are we from? Where two neighbouring lines share a county the segments join into one labelled band. Where a parent was born in one nation and their child in another, a small ship sits on the ring boundary between them. On the sample the Woodhouse line left County Down for the Scottish Borders in the 1880s.

  • Historic counties, not modern regions: Cumberland rather than Cumbria, Dumfriesshire rather than Dumfries and Galloway, Monmouthshire rather than Gwent. Boundaries are the historic ones and the chart says so in a footnote.
  • Three modes: by county (shown), by nation, or the crossings alone for a family that emigrated.
  • Unknown birthplaces leave a deliberate pale gap in the band rather than a guess.
  • Any of the twelve heritage motifs behind the chart, or the plain minimalist layout.

£99 framed, £75 print only, £55 digital file. Frame included in the framed price.

Design two · For an anniversary or a special birthday

Jubilee chart

Two-way circular family tree chart: ancestors above a couple, descendants below

£99 framed, 16 x 16 inch

A couple at the centre, their ancestors in the rings above, their children and grandchildren in the rings below, and a dedication ribbon at the foot.

Made for special wedding anniversaries, birthdays and family reunions: the one chart that shows a couple where they stand in their family, with the generations before them and the generations after them on a single sheet. Up to four generations of ancestors fill the upper half, paternal to the left and maternal to the right, and up to three generations of descendants fill the lower half, each wedge sized to the family. The heritage motif sits either side where the halves differ in depth, and the ribbon carries the dedication in your words.

  • Living descendants are shown as first name and birth year only, and every living name is approved on the proof before printing.
  • Dedication of your choice: "Golden Wedding · 1976 – 2026", "Dad at 80", or the family name and town.
  • Colour by the motif palette (shown) or by generation; white or soft background.
  • A group gift that the whole family can sign the card for.

£99 framed, £75 print only, £55 digital file. Frame included in the framed price.

Design three · The story in the corners

Cartouche chart

Six-generation circular family tree chart with four corner cartouches

£99 framed, 16 x 16 inch

The circular chart centred in the square frame, with four corner cartouches in the manner of eighteenth-century celestial maps: surnames, heartlands, trades, and span and completeness.

The corners of a square frame are usually empty. Here they carry four small panels drawn from your records: the ancestral surnames that recur most, the heartlands (the counties where the family lived longest, with the earliest recorded birth), the ancestral trades taken from the occupations in your tree (linen weavers, shepherds, coal miners, domestic servants), and a line of span and completeness such as "62 of 62 ancestors recorded, spanning 1800 to 1955". Each cartouche has a concave inner edge that follows the ring, so the circle keeps its room.

  • Every fact in the corners comes from the ancestors on the chart, so each line can be traced to a record in your file.
  • Cartouche frames in the motif's accent colour; a plain-border version for the minimalist layout.
  • Trades come from the occupation entries in your GEDCOM file (or a Trade column in the spreadsheet) and are tidied: "Ag Lab" becomes "Agricultural labourer". If your file has none, that corner carries your earliest known ancestors or a dedication in your own words instead.
  • Works with a complete tree or an incomplete one; the completeness line stays honest either way.

£99 framed, £75 print only, £55 digital file. Frame included in the framed price.

Design

Approximately 5 working days after your verified records arrive. Counties, trades and the completeness line are drawn from the records and checked by hand.

Digital proofs

A digital proof is agreed with you before anything is printed.

Questions

How do I order one of the new designs?
By enquiry for now, not through the chart builder. Use the contact form, say which design you have in mind and attach a GEDCOM file if you have one. I reply with a confirmation of the price, you send your verified records, and you receive a digital proof to approve before anything is printed. Nothing is charged until you confirm.
What do the three designs cost?
Each of the three is £99 framed, £75 print only, £55 digital file, at 16 x 16 inches in the same matte black or matte white wooden frame as the design gallery charts. The frame is included in the framed price. Delivery is free to the UK and Ireland.
Do the samples show a real family?
No. All three samples show the same fictional Douglas family of Kelso, with a County Down line and a Cumberland line added so the Origins Ring has something to show. Every name, date, place, trade and the ruby wedding are made up. Your own chart is drawn from your verified records.
Which counties does the Origins Ring use?
The historic counties of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland as they stood before the twentieth-century reorganisations, so Cumberland rather than Cumbria, Dumfriesshire rather than Dumfries and Galloway and Monmouthshire rather than Gwent, plus overseas states and provinces for families that emigrated. A place recorded only as a town is matched to its county. The reference date is printed in a footnote beneath the chart.
What if some birthplaces are unknown?
The band for that line is left as a deliberate pale gap, and if the outermost ancestor has no place but a nearer one does, the band takes the nearer colour drawn a little lighter. The Cartouche chart's completeness line counts only what is recorded. Neither chart guesses.
Can living people appear on the Jubilee chart?
Yes, as first name and year of birth only, which is how the sample shows Mark and Helen's children and grandchildren. You approve every living name on the proof, and proofs are shared only through a password-protected page.
Can I have a new design with one of the new motifs?
Yes. Any of the six gallery motifs (Scottish Thistle, Irish Harp, Welsh Daffodil, English Rose, Irish Shamrock and Celtic Knot) or the six new motifs available on request (Welsh Dragon, Compass Rose, English Oak, Claddagh, Maple Leaf and Southern Cross) can sit behind any of the three designs at the same prices.
What if my records have no trades, or no places?
The trades corner is filled only from what is in your file: the occupation entries in a GEDCOM export, or a Trade column if you send a spreadsheet. I do not research trades for you. Many trees carry names, dates and places but no occupations, so if your file has none that corner is not left blank or printed as an apology: it carries your earliest known ancestors instead, the oldest recorded person on your father's side and on your mother's side with their year and county, or a dedication in your own words. The same applies to the heartlands corner when birthplaces are missing.
How long does it take?
Design takes approximately 5 working days after your verified family records arrive. You then receive a digital proof and we go round until it is right. Printing and dispatch take 3 to 5 working days after proof approval.

Returns & Refunds Policy

Returns Policy Overview

Every product (digital files, unframed prints, or framed prints) available on this site is custom-made to order. To ensure the highest quality and fastest delivery, physical orders are fulfilled by regional print partners (LUMAPRINTS in the US, Artovo in the UK/EU). Because each piece is produced specifically for you upon ordering and data submission, our returns policy is tailored to bespoke manufacturing.

1. Damaged or Defective Items

If your physical order is damaged in transit or contains a manufacturing defect (such as a misprint or structural issue), you are entitled to a free replacement or a full refund.

  • Reporting Timeframe: Please report within 30 days of receiving your item.
  • How to Report: Email contact@markdmillican.co.uk with your order number and photographs of the damaged product and packaging.
  • Resolution: Free replacement expedited at no cost or a full refund to your original payment method.

2. Change of Mind / Buyer's Remorse

Because each design is custom-manufactured exclusively using your unique family data, we do not hold inventory. Therefore, we cannot accept returns or offer refunds for "change of mind" once an order is finalised and approved.

3. Order Cancellations & The Proofing Process

  • Data Pending (Full Refund): Cancel before submitting your GEDCOM or CSV data for a 100% full refund.
  • Proofing Stage (Partial Refund): If you cancel during the proofing stage before final print approval, up to £45 is retained to cover the design work already done and any balance above that is refunded, so a £45 digital-only order is not refundable once proofing has begun.
  • Final Approval (No Refund): Once final proof approval is submitted, printing begins immediately and orders cannot be cancelled or refunded.

4. Lost or Missing Packages

If tracking shows no updates or indicates your package has been delivered but is missing, allow 48 hours and check with neighbours or your local delivery office before contacting us for a replacement claim.

5. Digital Files & Reprints

Your chart files are kept for six months after delivery. In that time a lost digital file is re-sent free of charge, and a further print of the same chart can be ordered at the standard print price without repeating the design stage.
